ONE NO! AND MANY YES'S
The recent March from The Chiapas region of Mexico (The huge area occupied
by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) since their uprising
in 1994) was met along every roadside, village, town and city by thousands
of cheering supporters. The Zapatistas, mainly consisting of indigenous
Native Americans have faced mass discrimination in Mexico for hundreds
of years, began to converge in the mountains some 15 years ago and have
developed into a huge movement. This new phase in their struggle shows
Mexicans of many different races are uniting with them in struggle. EZLN
and the way they organize have been an inspiration for many movements
throughout the world. And for a new way of organizing, one that doesn't
have a set ideology - but says to all of us oppressed 'We must march with
questions on our lips not with an approved and certified procedure'.

TAKING ON THE WORLDS MONEYMEN
Sixty thousand people took to the streets in Quebec City, Canada in resistance
to what one critic called "The latest major campaign for the occupation
of the planet by the global corporate system." The proposed FTAA agreement,
like its predecessor NAFTA, would "free" global corporations to easily
move capital and jobs from place to place in search of higher, faster
profits-but leaving in their wake destroyed local economies, eviscerated
health care systems, ruined worker-safety and labour laws, environmental
disaster, and more. Protests against the FTAA continued for 3 days, with
many demonstrators, trying to tear down the perimeter fence that surrounded
the conference centre. Police propelled them with water cannons, tear
gas and plastic bullets. But the protesters fought the police from morning
until night. Demos also took place all along the Canadian border in Blaine,
Washington, Seattle, Buffalo, New York and elsewhere. This is more evidence,
that even in the West more and more people are saying enough is enough.

RISING UP AGAINST RACE MURDERS
After one week of turmoil in Cincinnati, USA a city-wide curfew was finally
lifted. The people of Cincinnati rose up in reaction to police corruption
and murder. Unarmed Timothy Thomas, 19, was shot and killed by an officer
of the Cincinnati police department during a brief chase. Thomas was the
5th black man since September to be killed by the Cincinnati police. The
unrest spread to other parts of the city and the mayor declared a curfew
effective from 8pm to 6 am. The Police arrested nearly 500 people during
the protests and hospitalized many during the week of protests, including
the unprovoked shooting of peaceful seven-year-old children.

MURDEROUS TURKISH STATE
We reported a few newsletters ago on the issue of thousands of Turkish
political prisoners being forced into isolation cells. The situation was
intensified by police raids against inmates on hunger strike in which
28 were murdered. Since then both the repression and violence has escalated,
with inmates being beaten every day. Out of the hundreds taking the desperate
measure of hunger strike, 19 have so far died, as we go to press. Both
the Turkish media and the British media have hardly covered this story,
so groups like ours and our Turkish and Kurdish friends need to highlight
these atrocities. We know that the Turkish Extreme right-wing government
are attempting to join the EU, and that they are very sensitive to International
exposure.
