OTHER ISSUE 8 ARTICLES: ANOTHER PAY RISE AND ANOTHER DEATH |
EMPTY BUILDING GIVES REFUGE Thousands of asylum seekers could soon be sleeping rough on the streets of Britain, but in Liverpool at least there will be somewhere for them to go. New laws mean seekers who don’t register their claim immediately on arrival can’t receive the usual support from the National Asylum Support Service. They will only be able to register in Liverpool and Croyden. Asylum seekers fleeing persecution often arrive in Britain broke, exhausted and traumatised, and now they are likely to face hunger and homelessness too. Volunteers have set up the only shelter for these people in the old Rodney
Youth centre, Myrtle Parade/Catharine St. Empty since the centre ran out
of money several years ago, it’s just been fixed up. The shelter
needs volunteers to stay evenings and nights, plus food, household goods
and money. Liverpool is a town built on immigration and we should be welcoming
those who are forced to come here. |
